Fahaka Puffer Breeding Guide

Tetraodon lineatus is a large solitary African freshwater puffer not bred in home aquaria; only its wild spawning season is documented.

Overview

The Fahaka or Nile puffer is a large pure-freshwater pufferfish. FishBase records the name Tetraodon lineatus and a maximum length of 43 cm TL, with distribution across the Nile, Chad, Senegal, Gambia, Geba and Volta basins and Lake Turkana. It is a molluscivore feeding mainly on benthic organisms such as freshwater mussels and snails, and reaches sexual maturity at about 18.2 cm; the recorded average lifespan in the Nile is about five years.

Spawning Behavior & Trigger

Documented reproductive information comes from wild populations rather than aquaria. Researchers measured the gonadosomatic index of Nile populations increasing from April to August, indicating spawning during these months. No courtship, egg or fry data from captivity appear in the reviewed sources, so no aquarium breeding protocol can be provided.
