Fahaka Puffer (Tetraodon lineatus) Care Guide
Tetraodon lineatus is a large pure-freshwater puffer from the Nile and other African basins, a solitary molluscivore needing a big species tank.
Overview
Tetraodon lineatus, the Fahaka or Nile Puffer, is a large pure-freshwater pufferfish reaching up to about 43 cm, marked with longitudinal yellow and black stripes. Like many puffers it can inflate when threatened and carries the toxin tetrodotoxin.
Taxonomy
- Family: Tetraodontidae
- Genus: Tetraodon
- Scientific name: Tetraodon lineatus
Habitat
It occurs in the upper Nile, Chad, Senegal, Gambia, Geba, Volta and Turkana basins across West, Northeast and East Africa. It is typically found in large rivers, open water, weed beds and vegetated fringes.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 600 L (about 158 gal)
- Temperature: 24-28 °C (75-82 °F)
- pH: 7.0-8.0
- GH: 10-25 °dGH
- Lifespan: 8-15 years (recorded wild average about 5 years)
Diet
It is a molluscivore feeding mainly on benthic organisms including freshwater mussels and snails, whose shells help wear down its continuously growing beak. A varied hard-shelled diet is required to manage beak growth.
Compatibility
An aggressive, middle-water puffer best kept entirely alone in a species tank. It is not suitable with any tankmates.
Conservation status
Recorded average lifespan in the River Nile is about five years; reproduction studies suggest a spawning season from around April to August based on gonadosomatic index measurements.
