Porcupine Puffer Breeding Guide

Why Diodon holocanthus is not bred in home aquaria: it is a pelagic spawner that releases eggs at the surface, with juveniles staying pelagic until several centimeters long.

Overview

Diodon holocanthus is a large, mobile pufferfish that reproduces by open-water spawning, a strategy that is effectively impossible to replicate in a home aquarium. The information below describes its natural reproduction rather than a captive breeding protocol.

Spawning Behavior & Trigger

The species spawns at the surface at dawn or at dusk, either in pairs or in groups of several males with a single female. This surface, open-water spawning produces eggs and larvae that drift in the water column far from any structure.

Egg & Fry Care

There is no parental care. The juveniles remain pelagic until they are at least 7 cm long, after which young and sub-adult fish sometimes form groups. The long open-ocean larval and juvenile phase cannot be reproduced in aquarium conditions.
