Overview
Crenicichla johanna (Heckel, 1840) is a predatory pike cichlid from South America. According to FishBase it is widespread in the Amazon basin in Peru, Brazil and Bolivia, the Orinoco basin in Colombia and Venezuela, and several drainages of the Guianas. It reaches a maximum standard length of about 28 cm.

Habitat
It is a benthopelagic freshwater species of tropical rivers. Members of the genus Crenicichla occupy a wide range of habitats including rivers, streams, pools and lakes, and typically conceal themselves near sunken wood or rocks before ambushing prey.

Diet
Crenicichla johanna is a carnivore. The genus is overwhelmingly predatory, feeding on fish, insects and small animals. A carnivore diet of meaty foods is required in captivity.
Compatibility
This is an aggressive, territorial mid-water predator. Small fish are treated as prey and should be avoided, along with slow or delicate species such as discus and angelfish. Large robust tank mates such as big plecos and silver dollars are more appropriate. The genus is generally unsuited to novice keepers.
Breeding
Like other Crenicichla, it is a cave-spawner. Breeding is considered advanced and requires a very large aquarium with secure spawning caves.
