Belt Pike Cichlid Care Guide

Crenicichla cincta is a predatory pike cichlid of the Amazon basin in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador, requiring large aquariums.

Overview

Crenicichla cincta (Regan, 1905) is a predatory pike cichlid from South America. According to FishBase, it occurs in the Amazon River basin in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador, from the Napo River to Marajo Island. Pike cichlids take their common name from the elongated body and wide mouth that recall the unrelated pike (Esox), matched by an ambush hunting strategy.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Cichlidae
  • Genus: Crenicichla
  • Scientific name: Crenicichla cincta
  • Described by Regan in 1905

Habitat

It is a benthopelagic freshwater species of tropical Amazonian rivers. Members of the genus Crenicichla occupy a wide range of habitats including rivers, streams, pools and lakes, typically remaining concealed near sunken wood or rocks before striking prey.

Tank requirements

  • Minimum tank volume: 600 L
  • Temperature: 25-29 °C (77-84 °F)
  • pH: 5.0-6.8
  • GH: 1-6 °dGH
  • Lifespan: 8-12 years

Diet

Crenicichla cincta is a carnivore. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.7, consistent with a piscivorous predator. The vast majority of pike cichlids feed on fish, insects and small animals. In aquaria a carnivore diet is required.

Compatibility

This is an aggressive, territorial mid-water predator. Small fish are seen as prey and should be avoided, as should slow or delicate species such as discus and angelfish. Robust, large companions such as big plecos, silver dollars and severums are better suited. The genus is generally regarded as unsuitable for inexperienced keepers.

Breeding

Like other Crenicichla, it is a cave-spawner. Breeding is considered advanced and demands a very large, well-structured aquarium with secure spawning sites.

Conservation status

IUCN Red List: Least Concern (assessed 10 November 2020, per FishBase).
