Crenicichla johanna is a large, widespread pike cichlid of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, recorded by FishBase from Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and French Guiana. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 28 cm, and Seriously Fish cites up to roughly 30 cm. Seriously Fish states plainly that this species has not been bred in the hobby.

According to Seriously Fish, the male is larger and likely to be more prominently marked, while females are more colourful. This is the main external guide for distinguishing the sexes.
