Chalinochromis popelini Breeding Guide
Breeding Chalinochromis popelini, a biparental cave-spawning Tanganyikan cichlid and sister species to C. brichardi: pairing, sexing and fry care.
Overview
Chalinochromis popelini is a rock-dwelling Lake Tanganyika cichlid and the sister species to C. brichardi, distinguished by a single black horizontal stripe along the body. Like the rest of the genus, it belongs to the tribe Lamprologini and is a biparental substrate spawner that is generally easy to breed in aquaria (Seriously Fish, Chalinochromis genus account).
Sexing
Sexual dimorphism within Chalinochromis is not pronounced. In mature males the genital papilla is visible as a small projection, which is absent in females, and males tend to be a little larger (Seriously Fish, genus account). Sexing young fish reliably is difficult, so a group is best grown out to allow a pair to form.
Conditioning
Condition prospective breeders on a varied diet of small live and frozen foods, matching the genus' preference for invertebrates taken from the biofilm and rocky substrate.
Breeding Setup
Provide a rocky aquascape with caves and sheltered crevices that a pair can defend as a spawning site. As with related Chalinochromis, a dedicated pair tank or ample space helps manage the species' territorial defence during breeding.
Spawning Behavior & Trigger
Spawning is secretive. Eggs are deposited in a cave or sheltered area and attached to a solid surface, where they remain for several days post-hatching (Seriously Fish, genus account).
Egg & Fry Care
Care is biparental: the female provides direct brood care while the male defends a small surrounding territory, and parental care continues for 6-8 weeks once the fry are free-swimming (Seriously Fish, genus account). Adults often spawn again soon after, excluding older fry from the territory until the new brood is free-swimming.
Common Challenges
Territorial aggression during brood care is the main management issue. Note: species-specific breeding figures for C. popelini were not confirmed in a whitelisted source; the spawning and fry-care detail above reflects the Chalinochromis genus account and should be treated as genus-level guidance.
