Black Durgon Care Guide
Melichthys niger is a circumtropical triggerfish reaching 50 cm, an algae and zooplankton feeder often forming loose aggregations.
Overview
Melichthys niger, the black durgon or black triggerfish, belongs to the family Balistidae. FishBase records it as a circumglobal, benthopelagic, reef-associated species reaching 50 cm in total length, with a common length of 30 cm. It appears black from a distance but shows mottled dark-blue or green colour with bright white lines along the dorsal and anal fins.
Taxonomy
- Family: Balistidae
- Genus: Melichthys
- Scientific name: Melichthys niger
Habitat
FishBase reports a circumglobal tropical distribution, uncommon in most areas but abundant around isolated oceanic islands. It inhabits clear seaward reefs and inner and outer reef crests near slopes or drop-offs, at depths of 0-75 m but usually 0-20 m.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 600 L (about 158 gal)
- Temperature: 24-26 °C (75-79 °F)
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- GH: 8-12 °dGH
- Water flow: high
- Lifespan: 10-20 years
Diet
FishBase reports a diet of calcareous algae and zooplankton, with some phytoplankton. Wikipedia adds small fish and squid, shrimp and other marine plant life, describing the species as omnivorous. In aquaria it is offered mixed meaty and algae-based marine foods twice daily.
Compatibility
FishBase notes the species occurs in small loose aggregations or solitary, occasionally swimming high above the substrate while feeding on zooplankton. It is not reef-safe and is kept with other large robust fish such as large angelfish and tangs. Avoid ornamental shrimp, snails, crabs and small fish.
Breeding
FishBase reports the species is oviparous with distinct pairing during breeding.
Conservation status
FishBase lists the species as Least Concern (assessed 6 June 2011).
