Eriocaulon sp. 'Type 2' Care Guide

Eriocaulon sp. 'Type 2' is a hobbyist designation for an unidentified pipewort with broader leaves, kept by Asian aquascapers in soft water with strong light and CO2.

Overview

Eriocaulon sp. 'Type 2' is a hobbyist designation for a robust, as-yet unidentified Eriocaulon with broader leaves than most aquarium forms. It circulates as a collector plant among Southeast Asian aquascapers. As with the genus generally, it is grown as a rosette and treated as an advanced species.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Eriocaulaceae
  • Genus: Eriocaulon
  • Trade name: Eriocaulon sp. 'Type 2'
  • Note: unidentified, not a formally described species

Habitat

Reported from Southeast Asia. Asian Eriocaulon species are typically associated with soft, low-mineral waters, and aquarium husbandry reflects those conditions with low hardness and acidic substrates.

Tank requirements

  • Temperature: 22-27 °C (72-81 °F)
  • pH: 5.0-6.8
  • GH: 1-6 °dGH
  • Lighting: high
  • CO2: required
  • Substrate: nutrient-rich
  • Placement: midground
  • Maximum height: ~12 cm

Cultivation

Eriocaulon species require soft water with carbonate hardness around 2 dKH or lower, strong light and CO2 delivered at substrate level. They are very responsive to root fertilisation, and rich acidic aquasoils speed growth. Growth of this form is slow.

Propagation

Propagated by division of the rosette into daughter plants once a clump has matured.
