Spade-Tail Checkerboard Care Guide
Dicrossus maculatus is a Brazilian Amazon dwarf cichlid with a checkerboard pattern and spade-shaped tail, a soft-acidic blackwater specialist.
Overview
Dicrossus maculatus is a dwarf cichlid of the family Cichlidae named for its checkerboard markings and spade-shaped caudal fin. It is native to the Rio Tapajos, Rio Maues and surrounding areas of the Brazilian Amazon basin. It is a blackwater specialist requiring soft, acidic water.
Taxonomy
- Family: Cichlidae
- Genus: Dicrossus
- Scientific name: Dicrossus maculatus
Habitat
Native waters of the Tapajos and Maues drainages are soft and acidic blackwater environments typical of South American dwarf cichlids. Seriously Fish reports very low hardness, below 1 degree dH, in the natural range. A heavily planted layout with cover and small caves reflects this habitat.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 80 L
- Temperature: 25-29 °C (77-84 °F)
- pH: 4.0-6.0
- GH: 1-3 °dGH
- Water flow: low
- Lifespan: 3-5 years
A sand substrate with leaf litter, driftwood and dense planting suits this species. Seriously Fish records natural pH as low as 3.4-5.4, reinforcing the need for soft acidic conditions.
Diet
A carnivore that takes small live and frozen foods. Live foods are reported to be important for bringing this species into breeding condition; quality frozen foods serve as staples, fed about twice daily.
Compatibility
Described as very peaceful towards non-conspecifics. This mid-water species suits soft-water community tanks with small tetras and corydoras, but should not be combined with large tetras or aggressive cichlids.
Breeding
A substrate spawner that is considered advanced to breed, requiring extremely acidic water for the eggs to hatch. Water quality is critical, and removing fry can be necessary before the female will spawn again.
