Overview
Crenicichla menezesi (Ploeg, 1991) is a medium-sized pike cichlid from South America. According to FishBase it occurs in rivers of Maranhao, Brazil. It reaches a maximum total length of about 18.9 cm. The species was named in honour of the Brazilian zoologist Naercio Aquino Menezes.

Habitat
It is a benthopelagic freshwater species of tropical northeastern Brazilian rivers. Members of the genus Crenicichla occupy rivers, streams, pools and lakes, and ambush prey from cover near sunken wood or rocks.

Diet
Crenicichla menezesi is a carnivore. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3. The genus is predominantly predatory, taking fish, insects and small animals; a carnivore diet is required in captivity.
Compatibility
This is a semi-aggressive, territorial mid-water predator. Small fish, tetras and shrimp are treated as prey and should be avoided. Larger robust tank mates such as severums, silver dollars and bristlenose plecos are more appropriate in a spacious aquarium.
Breeding
Like other Crenicichla, it is a cave-spawner. Breeding is considered intermediate in difficulty and benefits from a structured aquarium with secure spawning sites.
