Concave / U-Shape Composition Style Guide

The concave or U-shape composition places hardscape and plants on both sides with an open low centre, drawing the eye into the depth of the tank.

Overview

The concave composition, also called the U-shape, is one of the three basic Nature Aquarium layouts. Hardscape and plants are placed to the sides, leaving an open negative space in the centre of the tank. The result is high points on both flanks and a low, open valley running through the middle.

The central valley

The defining feature is the open central depression. With mass built up on the left and right and a clear channel in the middle, the layout forms a U or valley shape. This open centre is what gives the composition its character and is generally regarded as the easiest of the three basic layouts to create and carry off effectively.

Drawing the eye into depth

The valley acts as a visual pathway. By framing an open channel between two raised sides, the U-shape leads the viewer's eye from the front, down the centre and toward the back of the tank, reinforcing a sense of depth. The open foreground is critical to this effect.

Balance without symmetry

Although both sides are raised, they should be balanced rather than identical. The two side mounds are kept similar in weight but not mirror images, and the lowest point of the valley is usually placed slightly off-centre. This avoids the static feel of perfect symmetry while keeping the U-shape readable.

Design principles

  • High sides framing a low, open centre.
  • A central valley that draws the eye to the back.
  • Side mounds similar but not identical.
  • The lowest point placed slightly off-centre.
  • An open foreground that is critical to the effect.

Hardscape and plants

Stone and wood are arranged into the two flanking masses. The record lists preferred plants including Hemianthus callitrichoides, Rotala rotundifolia, Marsilea hirsuta, Eleocharis acicularis and Cryptocoryne parva, which suit a low open foreground rising to taller growth on the sides.

Maintenance and difficulty

As a planted layout, the U-shape is usually run with high lighting, CO2 injection and external filtration, with a high maintenance load from trimming. The record rates it an intermediate-level composition.
