Convex / Mountain Composition Style Guide

The convex or mound composition builds a single central peak that slopes down to open sides, a monumental island layout regarded as the hardest to do well.

Overview

The convex composition, also called the mound or island layout, is one of the three basic Nature Aquarium forms. It is constructed by positioning wood, rocks and taller plants toward the centre of the aquarium, so that a single mass rises in the middle and slopes down toward open areas on both sides.

A central peak

The defining element is a single central peak that descends to low, open flanks. This produces a monumental, mountain-like focal point in the middle of the tank, framed by open space on either side. The record describes the result as a dramatic skyline.

Mountain perspective and scale

The layout aims at a mountain perspective. A main central stone is supported by smaller flanking stones, and small foreground plants are used to imply scale, making the central mass read as a larger mountain or island. Keeping the skyline relatively uninterrupted reinforces the monumental impression.

The hardest of the three

Among the three basic shaped layouts, the convex mound is generally regarded as the most challenging to produce effectively. Concentrating mass in the centre while keeping both sides open and the composition balanced requires careful hardscape work, because a central peak has no side framing to hide an awkward line. The open flanks leave the main stone fully exposed from every angle, so each face of the mound must read convincingly on its own, which is why the record rates this style as advanced.

Design principles

  • A central main peak as the dominant stone.
  • Smaller supporting stones flanking the main peak.
  • A mountain perspective built into the hardscape.
  • Scale implied through small foreground plants.
  • Minimal interference with the skyline.

Hardscape and plants

Stone-led hardscape forms the central mound, with the rock structure carrying the composition and plants playing a supporting role. The record lists preferred plants including Eleocharis acicularis, Hemianthus callitrichoides, Bucephalandra and Vesicularia montagnei, which provide a low foreground carpet and fine detail around the central feature without overwhelming the peak or breaking its silhouette.

Maintenance and difficulty

As a high-tech planted layout, the convex composition is usually run with high lighting, CO2 injection and external filtration, and carries a high maintenance load. The record rates it an advanced-level style.
