Aponogeton rigidifolius Care Guide
Aponogeton rigidifolius is a Sri Lankan species of the family Aponogetonaceae with stiff, strap-like dark-green leaves, used as a slow-growing background specimen.
Overview
Aponogeton rigidifolius is a submerged aquatic plant in the family Aponogetonaceae, native to Sri Lanka. It is distinguished by firm, almost leather-like strap-shaped leaves coloured dark green to reddish, growing from a creeping cylindrical rhizome. Unlike many other species in its genus, it does not require a dormancy period and remains evergreen under stable aquarium conditions, where it is used as a background or midground specimen.
Taxonomy
- Family: Aponogetonaceae
- Genus: Aponogeton
- Scientific name: Aponogeton rigidifolius
- Common name: Rigid Aponogeton
Origin
The species is endemic to southwestern Sri Lanka. In the wild it grows in deeper water over sandy substrate, at temperatures around 20-25 °C and a water pH near 7.2.
Habitat
Natural habitats are deeper, soft-water bodies with sandy soil. The species tolerates harder water than most other Aponogetons and grows from a thick creeping rhizome that forms firm, midrib-bearing leaves up to roughly 60 cm long.
Tank requirements
- Temperature: 22-28 °C (optimal 23-28 °C)
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- GH: 2-12 °dGH
- Lighting: medium to high
- CO2: not strictly required; supplemental CO2 (20-40 mg/L) supports growth
- Substrate: nutrient-rich / fine gravel
- Maximum height: about 50-60 cm
- Placement: background / midground
Planting & care
The rhizome is planted in fine, nutrient-rich substrate that allows root development. The plant is slow growing but tough once established, and does not enter dormancy under stable conditions. Medium to high light, good water movement and added CO2 promote faster growth and deeper leaf colour.
Propagation
Propagation is by division of the rhizome, splitting the plant or removing daughter plants.
Difficulty
The species is rated demanding (intermediate to difficult). Its slow growth, preference for stable parameters and need for adequate light and feeding place it above true beginner plants.
