Unlike many plecos, it is a carnivore that does not eat algae. Native to the Xingu River in Brazil and now critically endangered in the wild.

Habitat
Endemic to the lower Rio Xingu in the Brazilian state of Pará. Inhabits rocky rapids with strong current and water temperatures up to 30 °C. Listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and protected under Brazilian legislation; international trade has been heavily restricted since the construction of the Belo Monte dam altered its habitat.
