Aquarium Water Change Step by Step: A Beginner's Guide

A complete, plain walkthrough of a routine partial water change: the gear, the steps, and the two rules that keep fish safe, temperature-match and dechlorinate.

The routine partial water change is the single most important maintenance task in fishkeeping. Aquarists use water changes to keep toxins under control by removing aquarium water and vacuuming fish waste and food from the gravel, then replacing it with fresh, treated water. Done right it is quick, gentle and safe, and the fish can stay in the tank the whole time. Basic aquarium maintenance is generally performed weekly to keep conditions optimal for fish and plants, and the partial water change is the heart of that routine. This guide walks through it step by step.

What you need

  • A bucket kept only for aquarium use, never washed with soap.
  • A siphon or gravel-vacuum to remove water and clean the substrate.
  • A water conditioner (dechlorinator) to treat the replacement water.
  • A thermometer to match the temperature of the new water to the tank.

Step by step

  1. Switch off and unplug the heater, and ideally the filter, so they are not running while the water level drops.
  2. Siphon out about 30% of the water, moving the gravel-vacuum through the substrate to lift out trapped waste as you go.
  3. Prepare the replacement water at the same temperature as the tank, checking with a thermometer, since fish do not tolerate sudden changes in temperature.
  4. Add dechlorinator to the new water, dosed for the volume you are adding, because tap water cannot be used until chlorine or chloramine is removed.
  5. Pour or siphon the treated water back in gently, resting it on a plate or your hand so it does not blast the substrate.
  6. Plug the heater and filter back in and confirm both are running before you walk away.

Reassuring notes for beginners

A partial change like this is meant to be undramatic. The fish do not need to be netted out; they simply ride out the lower water level. A little cloudiness or stirred-up substrate is normal and settles within an hour or so. Keep changes modest and regular rather than large and occasional, because gentle routine changes are far less stressful than big sudden ones.
