Variatus Platy Care Guide

Xiphophorus variatus is a hardy livebearer endemic to eastern Mexico, slightly larger than the common platy and suited to peaceful community tanks.

Overview

Xiphophorus variatus, the variable platyfish, is a livebearer of the family Poeciliidae endemic to Mexico. It is hardier and slightly larger than the common platy and exists in many selectively bred colour varieties. The species has been used in genetic research.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Poeciliidae
  • Genus: Xiphophorus
  • Scientific name: Xiphophorus variatus

Habitat

The species is endemic to Mexico, ranging from southern Tamaulipas to northern Veracruz. It inhabits warm springs, weedy canals and ditches. Where introduced outside its range it has been flagged as a potential pest.

Tank requirements

  • Minimum tank volume: 80 L
  • Temperature: 18-28 °C (64-82 °F)
  • pH: 7.0-8.5
  • GH: 10-25 °dGH
  • Lifespan: 3-5 years

Diet

The variable platy is an omnivore, feeding on worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter in the wild and on zoobenthos and detritus. In the aquarium it readily accepts frozen, live and dried foods. The species requires moderately hard to hard water and does not thrive in soft, acidic conditions.

Compatibility

The species is peaceful and hardy, making it suitable for community aquariums. Males can harass females during breeding, so keeping more females than males and providing dense planting is recommended to reduce aggression.

Breeding

Xiphophorus variatus is a livebearer. After a gestation of roughly four to seven weeks, females may produce broods often exceeding 100 young; FishBase reports up to about 100 young after a 24-day gestation. Adults do not consume their fry, which quickly accept brine shrimp nauplii and powdered foods.

Conservation status

According to FishBase, Xiphophorus variatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2018).
