Thorichthys socolofi Breeding Guide
Breeding Thorichthys socolofi, an early-maturing firemouth relative that pairs off in groups and breeds reliably with biparental care of 100-200 eggs.
Overview
Thorichthys socolofi is a firemouth relative from southern Mexico that breeds readily in the aquarium, often at an early age of around 10 months, and does not require very large tanks. It is a biparental substrate spawner.
Conditioning
Practical Fishkeeping recommends buying a group of 8 to 12 young fish and growing them up in a 30 to 40 gallon aquarium so that pairs form naturally; the group typically begins pairing off at about 10 months of age, with several pairs often beginning to breed at the same time. In nature breeding falls in the dry season, roughly February to May. Maintain water temperature around 24-27 C (75-80 F).
Breeding Setup
- Provide scattered rockwork and gravel; the fish sift gravel, so a heavily planted tank is less suitable, though robust plants such as Anubias tolerate it.
- Allow space for multiple pairs to establish territories when group-rearing.
- Use sand or fine gravel substrate for pit excavation.
- A tank of roughly 200 L suits a pair.
Spawning Behavior & Trigger
Spawns number some 100-200 eggs depending on the female's size. Eggs are ovoid, yellowish and translucent, blending with the spawning surface. The female closely guards the spawn, circulating water over the eggs with her pectoral fins and removing fungused eggs, while the male chases away intruders.
Egg & Fry Care
Eggs hatch in about 48 hours at around 26 C. The pair excavates a small pit and places the newly hatched wrigglers in it. After 5 to 6 days the yolk sac is consumed and the young begin to swim. Fry can be left with the parents, which are reliable guardians; other tank occupants are gradually allowed near the nest as the fry disperse.
Common Challenges
When several pairs spawn at once in a group setup, territorial disputes increase, so provide ample structure to break sightlines. Otherwise the species is considered an undemanding breeder.
