Synodontis decorus is a large Congo Basin catfish with bold markings and an elongated dorsal-fin filament, suited to soft to neutral water.
Overview
Synodontis decorus is an upside-down catfish native to Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo, occurring throughout the Congo Basin except the Luapula and Luvua systems. It is also known as the clown catfish. Total length reaches about 31.8 cm. Adults carry bold dark body markings and an elongated dorsal-fin filament.

Habitat
The species lives in the Congo Basin, including Pool Malebo and the Ubangi and Kasai drainages, and the Lukuga River up to the Kisimba-Kilia rapids. FishBase lists a temperature range of 23–27 °C and pH of 6.0–8.0 for its freshwater, benthopelagic habitat.

Diet
Synodontis decorus is omnivorous, with a trophic level near 2.9. The genus consumes insect larvae, algae, gastropods, bivalves, sponges, crustaceans and fish eggs. A varied prepared and frozen diet suits the aquarium, offered once daily.
Compatibility
A peaceful but large, nocturnal, bottom-dwelling catfish. It is housed with similarly robust tankmates and given caves and dim lighting. Very small fishes are unsuitable companions for a fish of this size.
Breeding
The species is oviparous and shows distinct pairing during breeding. Aquarium breeding is rarely reported.
