Propagating Syngonanthus sp. 'Belem' from Cuttings

How to propagate the advanced Eriocaulaceae star plant Syngonanthus sp. 'Belem' by cuttings, plus the very soft acidic water, CO2 and aquasoil it demands to grow without melting.

Overview

Syngonanthus sp. 'Belem' is an advanced star plant from the family Eriocaulaceae, with whorls of narrow leaves. It was first introduced to the hobby as 'Tonina sp. belem' before botanists confirmed it belongs to the genus Syngonanthus. The most common related species, Syngonanthus macrocaulon, is found in the Amazon in very soft blackwater rivers.

Propagation Method (Cuttings)

'Belem' is propagated by cuttings and lateral-shoot division. Because it is slow-growing and resents heavy trimming, you propagate by selectively removing the tallest growth heads rather than topping the whole plant at once, leaving lower heads to continue developing.

Step-by-Step

  1. Identify the tallest, healthiest growth head and pick it off at the point where it connects to the main stem.
  2. Leave at least a couple of growth heads behind on the parent so it can keep growing.
  3. Strip the lowest leaves from the harvested shoot to expose a short bare stem.
  4. Replant the bare stem firmly into aquasoil; it will root and form a new plant over time.

Conditions for Healthy Growth

A nutrient-rich, acidic soil substrate is a significant advantage; aquasoil is the recommended substrate. It needs good light levels and should not be shaded, and CO2 injection should be present, though it need not be high. Maintain very soft, acidic water for stable growth.

Trimming & Maintenance

Trim conservatively and infrequently. Slow-growing bushes such as Syngonanthus are typically replanted only once every four months or so, harvesting the tallest heads each time and replanting the healthiest portions.

Common Challenges

The biggest risks are hard water and unstable parameters, which cause the plant to melt. Insufficient light or shading from faster neighbours stunts it, and cutting off all growth heads at once can stall or kill the stem. Keep KH very low, light strong, and trimming gentle.
