  • Genus: Devario (formerly Danio)
  • Scientific name: Devario spinosus
  • Described by: Day, 1870

Habitat

FishBase records the species from freshwater in Myanmar, in a tropical, benthopelagic setting.

Tank requirements

  • Minimum tank volume: 100 L
  • Temperature: 18-24 °C (64-75 °F)
  • pH: 6.5-7.8
  • GH: 5-18 °dGH
  • School size: at least 6 individuals
  • Lifespan: 3-5 years

As an active Devario it benefits from a long aquarium with open swimming space and a tight-fitting cover, since members of the genus are accomplished jumpers.

Diet

Like other devarios it is an omnivorous micropredator that accepts dried foods readily and benefits from small live or frozen items such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm.

Compatibility

It is a peaceful, active schooling fish best kept in a group of at least six. Pair it with robust, similarly sized companions; its constant activity makes it unsuitable alongside very small or timid species.
