Semi-banded Kuhli Loach (Pangio semicincta) Care Guide

Pangio semicincta is the eel-like loach commonly sold as 'kuhli loach', a peaceful nocturnal forager of Southeast Asian blackwater streams.

Overview

Pangio semicincta is a small, eel-like cobitid loach commonly traded under the name 'kuhli loach'. It is distinguished by incomplete dark bands that do not fully encircle the lower body, with the saddles breaking up further in some older individuals. It is a peaceful, nocturnal bottom-dweller that spends much of its time burrowed in soft substrate.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Cobitidae
  • Genus: Pangio
  • Scientific name: Pangio semicincta

Habitat

The species is native to Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo, where it is typically abundant in shallow, slow-moving forest streams, swamps and blackwater peat environments carpeted with leaf litter.

Tank requirements

  • Minimum tank volume: 80 L
  • Temperature: 24-28 °C (75-82 °F)
  • pH: 5.5-7.0
  • GH: 1-8 °dGH
  • Group size: 6 or more individuals
  • Lifespan: 8-12 years

Diet

It is a carnivorous micropredator that feeds on insect larvae and small crustaceans. In the aquarium it accepts sinking dried foods along with live and frozen Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm, fed about twice daily.

Compatibility

It is peaceful both with its own kind and with other fishes. Naturally found in large aggregations, it should be kept in a group of at least six. A soft sand substrate, dim lighting and plenty of cover bring out natural behaviour; the tank should be well covered, as the species may jump when stressed. Aggressive tankmates are best avoided.
