Breeding Scobinancistrus pariolispos (L048)

Breeding guide for Scobinancistrus pariolispos (L048): a Tapajos/Tocantins cave spawner with male egg-guarding, not yet reported bred in home aquaria.

Overview

Scobinancistrus pariolispos, the Golden Cloud Pleco (L048), is a loricariid native to the Tapajos and Tocantins river basins in Brazil. It is closely related to the Sunshine Pleco (L014) and shares its care needs. There are no reported cases of L048 being bred successfully in home aquaria, but in nature it is believed to be a cave spawner with the male guarding the eggs, so the protocol below follows that genus pattern.

Sexing

There are no easily visible external differences between the sexes, but mature males may develop broader heads and more pronounced odontodes (small bristle-like structures) on the pectoral fins and cheeks.

Breeding Setup

As a cave breeder the species requires a suitable breeding cave for any chance of reproduction, alongside the spacious, well-filtered, well-oxygenated tank this large pleco needs.

Spawning Behavior & Trigger

In the wild the species is understood to spawn in caves, with the male guarding the eggs and fry until they are free-swimming, mirroring the behaviour of the closely related and successfully bred L014.

Egg & Fry Care

Following the loricariid cave-spawning pattern, the male tends the clutch within the cave until the fry become free-swimming; maintaining clean, warm, well-oxygenated water during this period is essential.

Common Challenges

The Scobinancistrus group demands pristine, well-filtered, not-too-hard water, and adult males are territorial toward other large loricariids. Combined with the absence of any documented captive spawning, this makes L048 a demanding subject.
