Propagating Bog Bulrush (Schoenoplectiella mucronata)
How to propagate bog bulrush by rhizome and clump division or seed. A marginal, emergent sedge for marsh paludariums and shallow water, not a submerged plant.
Overview
Schoenoplectiella mucronata, the bog bulrush (also called rough-seed bulrush or ricefield bulrush), is a perennial herb in the sedge family (Cyperaceae). Its erect, three-angled stems grow in dense clumps and reach about one meter in height. The leaves form sheaths around the stem base but usually lack blades, and the inflorescence is a headlike cluster of cone-shaped spikelets accompanied by a stiff, angled bract that can look like a continuation of the stem.
Propagation Method
Bog bulrush grows from a short, hard rhizome and spreads by vegetative reproduction. The fastest and most reliable way to multiply it is rhizome or clump division — lifting an established clump and splitting it into rooted sections. It can also be raised from seed, since each plant produces clusters of spikelets, though this is slower and less predictable.
Step-by-Step
- Lift a mature, dense clump from the substrate, keeping the short rhizome and roots intact.
- Rinse off excess soil so you can see where the stems join the rhizome.
- Divide the clump into sections, each carrying several healthy stems and a piece of rhizome with roots.
- Replant each division into moist substrate or shallow water along the margin, firming it in so the rhizome stays anchored.
- Keep the substrate saturated and the crown at or just above the waterline while new growth establishes.
- Alternatively, sow ripe seed onto moist substrate in spring and keep it consistently wet until seedlings appear.
Conditions for Healthy Growth
This species is adaptable and tolerates slightly brackish water, which makes it useful in marsh and brackish paludarium setups. Provide bright light, a temperature range of roughly 18-28 degrees Celsius, and a pH between about 7 and 8.5. Any substrate will do as long as it stays wet, and supplemental nutrients support its medium growth rate.
Maintenance
Keep the substrate or margin permanently moist to wet. Thin overcrowded clumps every few weeks and remove old or browning stems to keep the stand vigorous. Dividing the clump periodically both rejuvenates the plant and gives you new propagules.
