Mahnert's Stone Loach (Schistura mahnerti) Breeding Guide
Breeding overview for Schistura mahnerti, a Nemacheilidae stone loach; aquarium spawning is unrecorded, with honest genus-level notes.
Overview
Schistura mahnerti is a stone loach of the genus Schistura, family Nemacheilidae. Schistura is the most species-rich genus among nemacheilid loaches, with over 200 recognised species distributed across streams and rivers of southern and eastern Asia. Members are adapted to fast-flowing aquatic environments. Aquarium spawning of this species has not been documented.
Sexing
Within Schistura, sexing is subtle and best assessed in a group. As documented for the congener Schistura balteata, males may show enlarged mouthparts and 'cheeks', most visible when the fish is viewed from above or head-on, while females tend to be slightly thicker-bodied, especially when carrying eggs.
Breeding Setup
These loaches are associated with clear, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water around watersheds and headwaters, with substrates of coarse sand, gravel, rocks and boulders and minimal aquatic vegetation. Reproducing this high-gradient stream environment is the foundation for any breeding attempt.
