Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps is a species in the family Loricariidae. One of the largest commonly kept plecos, the Sailfin is named for its impressive, tall dorsal fin. Its body features a leopard-like pattern of dark brown spots on a tan background. While hardy and excellent at algae control, it grows enormous and requires a very large aquarium. Often sold small but can reach 50 cm, producing significant bioload.

Habitat
Native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America. Inhabits a wide range of habitats from rivers to floodplain lakes. Recognised by the tall, sail-like dorsal fin and dark leopard-spot pattern; reaches a large adult size unsuitable for small aquariums.
