Rotala sp. 'Pearl' Care Guide
Rotala sp. 'Pearl' is a small-leaved selection of Rotala macrandra (Lythraceae) that needs strong light, CO2 and nutrients for its pale, colourful shoots.
Overview
Rotala sp. 'Pearl' is a delicate, very small-leaved stem plant described as a selection of Rotala macrandra, family Lythraceae. It produces green, purple and pink hues under optimal conditions and is grown for its compact, pale shoots.
Taxonomy
- Family: Lythraceae
- Genus: Rotala
- Scientific name: Rotala sp. 'Pearl'
- Type: selection of R. macrandra
Habitat
As a cultivated selection of Rotala macrandra, 'Pearl' has no defined wild population. The parent species originates from Asia and is grown submersed as a stem plant in aquaria.
Tank requirements
- Temperature: 22-28 °C
- pH: 5.5-7.0
- GH: 2-10 °dGH
- Lighting: high (strong)
- CO2: required
- Maximum height: about 20 cm
- Placement: midground
Care and growth
Strong lighting together with good CO2 and nutrient supply is recommended. The plant grows relatively fast, so maintenance is required to prevent its lower leaves from being shaded out. Pale, yellow or yellow-white leaves usually indicate iron or nitrogen deficiency, so balanced fertilization matters.
Propagation
Propagation is by cuttings replanted into the substrate; CO2 injection, water-column dosing and a quality plant substrate support recovery and growth.
