Root Tabs vs Water-Column Dosing: Which Does Your Planted Tank Need?

Which plants really benefit from substrate root tabs versus liquid water-column dosing, and why the 'root feeder' label is often misunderstood.

Two ways to feed plants

You can deliver nutrients into the water column (liquid fertiliser absorbed through the leaves) or into the substrate (root tabs and enriched soil absorbed through the roots). Both work, and most plants can use either route.

The 'root feeder' myth

The 2Hr Aquarist points out there is little correlation between the size of a plant's root system and where it prefers to take up nutrients. Classic 'root feeders' such as Amazon swords and Cryptocoryne actually grow well on water-column dosing alone, provided the water column is dosed sufficiently. Aquatic leaves have a reduced cuticle, which makes them permeable and very good at absorbing dissolved minerals.

When root tabs genuinely help

Root tabs let you deliver a high nutrient concentration directly to the root zone — useful when you would rather not push very high nutrient levels into the whole water column, and essential in inert substrates that hold no nutrients of their own (the 2Hr Aquarist notes inert substrates only slowly release nutrients from root tabs). Tropica's nutrition capsules are aimed at large, sturdy rooted plants and established carpets and release over about 6-9 months.

When water-column dosing is enough

  • Epiphytes (Anubias, Java fern, Bucephalandra) and mosses have no substrate roots and feed only from the water column.
  • Floating plants take everything from the water — Tropica's liquid fertiliser is suited to all of these.
  • Stem plants and most hardy crypts and swords thrive on water-column dosing if the tank is well dosed.
