Gold Spot Pleco (L001) Care Guide
Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus (Gold Spot Pleco, L001) is a large sailfin pleco endemic to the Tocantins basin in Brazil, reaching nearly 40 cm.
Overview
Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is a sailfin pleco of the family Loricariidae and subfamily Hypostominae. It is one of the original L-numbered species, traded as L001 (also L022). The body is dorsoventrally flattened and dark brown with light golden spots covering the body and fins; the large dorsal fin has ten rays. It is frequently confused with P. pardalis and P. gibbiceps.
Taxonomy
- Family: Loricariidae
- Subfamily: Hypostominae
- Genus: Pterygoplichthys
- Scientific name: Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus
- Trade code: L001 (also L022)
Habitat
The species is endemic to Brazil, occurring in the Tocantins River basin.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 500 L
- Temperature: 26-29 °C (79-84 °F)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- GH: 2-12 °dGH
- Water flow: moderate, well-oxygenated
- Adult size: up to about 38 cm SL
- Lifespan: about 8-12 years
Given its large adult size and high waste output, this species needs a spacious tank with strong filtration and driftwood.
Diet
It is an omnivore. A predominantly plant-based diet with occasional protein foods suits the species; feeding once daily is appropriate. It is not reliably plant-safe in heavily planted aquariums.
Compatibility
Peaceful and bottom-dwelling, it can share a large tank with robust mid-water fish such as tetras and with corydoras. Other territorial plecos are best avoided.
