Breeding Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus (L001)
Breeding overview for the Gold Spot Sailfin Pleco Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus (L001): a riverbank burrow spawner that is not realistically bred in the home aquarium.
Overview
Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus (C. Weber, 1991), the Gold Spot Sailfin Pleco (L001), is a large armoured catfish endemic to Brazil in the Tocantins River basin, growing to around 38 cm (15 in) and recorded at 26-29 C with pH 6.5-7.5 (Wikipedia).
Spawning Behavior & Trigger
The species uses a polygamous mating system in which males establish and defend territories and prepare burrows or caves in riverbanks or substrate. They excavate a deep tunnel in muddy banks where the eggs are deposited and develop.
Common Challenges
Home aquaria cannot provide the deep, excavatable muddy banks, river-scale space and seasonal cues this species depends on for reproduction, which is why no aquarium spawning has been reported. Owners should focus on long-term care of this large, long-lived pleco rather than breeding.
