Polka Dot Loach (Botia kubotai) Breeding Guide
Botia kubotai is virtually never home-bred; trade fish are hormone-farmed, with only a single accidental community-tank fry recorded.
Overview
The polka dot loach, Botia kubotai, is a striking yellow-and-dark patterned botiid from Myanmar. Like the majority of botiid loaches it is essentially not bred in the home aquarium, and the fish offered in the trade are produced by other means.
Sexing
Seriously Fish notes that mature females are fuller-bodied with a rounded snout, while males have an elongated snout with noticeably thicker, fleshier lips. These differences are only apparent in mature specimens.
Spawning Behavior & Trigger
No deliberate captive spawning protocol is documented for this species. The single recorded fry appeared spontaneously within a well-stocked community tank rather than from a planned breeding setup, so no reliable trigger or behaviour sequence can be described from the source.
Common Challenges
Successful home breeding is virtually non-existent. Wild-caught and hormone-bred fish are the primary sources for the hobby. The appearance of hormone-induced hybrids on the market is also a concern, as such fish can be mis-sold as pure B. kubotai.
