Breeding Paracyprichromis nigripinnis (Blue Neon)
Breeding guide for Paracyprichromis nigripinnis, the Blue Neon: a peaceful Tanganyikan maternal mouthbrooder spawning against cave walls in broods of 5-25 eggs.
Overview
Paracyprichromis nigripinnis, the Blue Neon, is a small, peaceful cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, reaching a standard length of around 11 cm. It is described as a polygamous maternal mouthbrooder in which females incubate the eggs orally and no paternal care is given. Males establish cave territories and the species spawns against rocky walls, distinguishing it from the open-water Cyprichromis.
Sexing
Males tend to grow larger than females, are more colourful and develop longer caudal extensions. The intense neon-blue striping along the dark body is most pronounced in displaying males, which makes sexing easier within a mature, settled group than in juveniles.
Conditioning
This is a small-mouthed zooplankton feeder, so live and frozen foods should form the bulk of the diet. Several modest feeds through the day suit its feeding style. Maintain a settled shoal in hard, alkaline water at 24-27 °C to keep the fish in steady spawning condition.
Breeding Setup
Keep a shoal of at least eight fish with several females per male. Provide caves and vertical rock walls so males can hold territories; this rocky structure is the spawning substrate the species relies on, and males may be seen hanging vertically or upside down beneath ledges.
Spawning Behavior & Trigger
Within his cave territory, the male follows and sits just above the female, and spawning takes place against the rocky walls, with eggs and milt released together until the female has gathered her clutch. Stable, hard, alkaline water and an established group encourage the pair to spawn.
Egg & Fry Care
The female produces 5-25 eggs per spawning and carries the brood in her buccal cavity for around three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Because there is no paternal care, the female alone protects the developing brood. Released fry can be raised on small live and frozen foods.
Common Challenges
Being very peaceful and retiring, the Blue Neon is easily out-competed by aggressive tankmates and may refuse to spawn if stressed. A calm community, a sufficiently large group and proper rocky cover are the main requirements for breeding. Small brood sizes also keep per-spawn yields modest.
