Moustached Danio (Danio dangila) Breeding Guide
Breeding the large Danio dangila: sexing by anal-fin colour, live-food conditioning, group spawning into coarse gravel and rearing fast-growing fry.
Overview
Danio dangila is the largest Danio species and spawns without parental care, per Seriously Fish. Documented aquarium spawning is limited; one recorded success involved a group of 8 adults of the Meghalaya population that spawned during a thunderstorm after a period of conditioning with live foods.
Sexing
Females develop a rounder belly and display a white stripe on the distal edge of the anal fin, whereas males show red colouring there instead; the difference is clearest in spawning condition as males intensify in colour and females fill with eggs (Seriously Fish).
Conditioning
Live foods are essential preparation. Seriously Fish notes a good quality dried product can form the staple, supplemented with regular meals of small live and frozen fare such as chironomid larvae (bloodworm), Daphnia and Artemia.
Breeding Setup
- Spawn a conditioned group rather than a single pair (the documented success used 8 adults).
- A coarse gravel substrate, into which the eggs fall, with the females leading and males following (Seriously Fish).
- Soft to moderately hard water; the species range is recorded at 16-24 C, pH 6.5-7.5 and 36-268 ppm hardness.
Spawning Behavior & Trigger
In the documented case the fish spawned within the coarse gravel substrate, females leading and males behind, during a thunderstorm following live-food conditioning (Seriously Fish).
Egg & Fry Care
Eggs hatch in about 48 hours and the fry become free-swimming roughly 48 hours later. They accept Artemia nauplii and fry foods and grow quickly, reaching 12-15 mm within 30 days (Seriously Fish).
Common Challenges
This species can be trickier than smaller danios, and documented aquarium spawning is scarce, so a conditioned group, coarse gravel and live-food preparation are the practical levers. The larger adult size also calls for a correspondingly large spawning space.
