Magnetic Glass Cleaner: A Practical Guide

A magnetic glass cleaner is a two-piece magnet that wipes algae from the inside of an aquarium while the user holds the outer half, keeping hands dry.

Overview

A magnetic glass cleaner is a tool used to remove algae from the inside surface of an aquarium without putting hands in the water. It consists of two magnetically coupled halves: an inner piece with an abrasive or scrubbing pad that sits against the glass underwater, and an outer piece the user moves along the outside.

How it works

The two halves attract through the glass. Moving the dry outer half drags the submerged inner half across the pane, wiping algae off the surface. This lets the keeper clean the glass quickly without rolling up sleeves or getting hands wet.

Why use one

Algae naturally films over aquarium walls and reduces visibility. A magnet cleaner is among the simplest ways to wipe it off between water changes, and some models pair with a glass-safe scraper blade that can cut through tougher growth such as hard green spot algae.

Glass versus acrylic

Cleaners are sold in glass-safe and acrylic-safe versions, and the right one must be chosen for the tank material. Acrylic scratches far more easily than glass, so a pad rated only for glass should not be used on an acrylic tank. Soft melamine-foam scrubbers are described as safe for both glass and acrylic.

Avoiding scratches

The main risk is trapping a grain of sand or substrate between the pad and the glass, which can score a scratch as the magnet is dragged. To reduce this, keep the cleaner away from the substrate line, wipe downward near the bottom, and check the pad for grit before and after use.

Sizing

Magnet strength is matched to glass thickness, with weaker magnets for thin nano-tank panels and stronger ones for the thick panes of large aquariums. A magnet too weak for the glass will not hold; one stronger than needed is harder to move and more likely to snap together if separated. Some designs float when the two halves separate, which makes it easier to retrieve the inner piece without reaching deep into the tank.

Use alongside other tools

A magnet cleaner handles the routine film of algae but is not the only option. Soft melamine-foam scrubbers wipe algae off and are described as safe for both glass and acrylic, while a glass-safe scraper blade is one of the few tools that cuts through stubborn green spot algae. Keeping the glass clear is part of regular maintenance carried out alongside water changes, rather than a one-time task.
