Ludwigia peruensis Care Guide
Ludwigia peruensis is a South American stem plant of the family Onagraceae, valued in aquaria for red foliage that intensifies under strong light.
Overview
Ludwigia peruensis is an aquatic stem plant belonging to the genus Ludwigia, a cosmopolitan group of roughly 82 species commonly called water-primroses or primrose-willows. In the aquarium trade the name is frequently applied to red-leaved Ludwigia of South American origin. Under sufficient lighting the foliage develops red to wine-red tones, while in low light the leaves turn green and may be shed.
Taxonomy
- Family: Onagraceae
- Genus: Ludwigia
- Scientific name: Ludwigia peruensis
- Common name: Peruvian Ludwigia
Habitat
The genus Ludwigia grows in wet habitats, with several species nearly or fully aquatic and adapted to growing in water through stem aerenchyma. Ludwigia peruensis is associated with South America; the related red Ludwigia commonly traded under this name originate from wetland and marshy environments.
Aquarium requirements
- Temperature: 22-28 °C (72-82 °F)
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- GH: 2-12 °dGH
- Lighting: medium to high (high light intensifies red colour)
- CO2: not strictly required, but beneficial
- Maximum height: up to about 50 cm
- Placement: background
Growth and care
This is a fast-growing stem plant that grows upright toward the water surface. A nutrient-rich substrate together with iron and micronutrient supply supports vigorous growth and coloration. Without adequate light the leaves green out, so strong illumination is the key factor for red expression.
Propagation
Ludwigia peruensis is propagated by cuttings. Cutting the shoot tip encourages the development of lateral shoots; trimmed tops can be replanted into the substrate to form new plants. Frequent trimming, roughly every 10 days, keeps the stand dense.
