Ludwigia natans Care Guide
Ludwigia natans, a trade name for Ludwigia repens (Onagraceae), is an easy-care stem plant with green-and-red leaves tolerating a wide range of conditions.
Overview
Ludwigia natans is a name widely used in the aquarium hobby for Ludwigia repens, a stem plant of the family Onagraceae. Ludwigia natans Elliott is recorded as a synonym of L. repens. It is among the easier red-tinged stem plants, producing green to reddish leaves and steady upright growth across a broad range of water conditions.
Taxonomy
- Family: Onagraceae
- Genus: Ludwigia
- Scientific name: Ludwigia natans
- Synonym: Ludwigia natans Elliott (= Ludwigia repens)
Habitat
Ludwigia repens is native to the Americas, including the southern United States, Central America and the Caribbean. It is a mat-forming perennial herb of aquatic habitats with creeping stems that root at the nodes; it can spread readily and become naturalised, and is regarded as an aquatic weed in some regions.
Aquarium requirements
- Temperature: 20-28 °C (68-82 °F)
- pH: 6.0-7.8
- GH: 3-14 °dGH
- Lighting: medium to high (stronger light promotes red colour)
- CO2: not necessary
- Maximum height: up to about 40 cm
- Placement: background
Growth and care
This is a fast-growing, undemanding stem plant. Water hardness has little influence on growth, and CO2 is not required, though stronger lighting and good nutrient levels intensify the red colouration. A nutrient-rich substrate supports healthy development.
Propagation
Propagation is by cuttings: stem tips or side shoots are cut and replanted into the substrate, where they root and continue growing. Regular topping encourages a denser, bushier stand.
