Ludwigia glandulosa 'Perennis' Care Guide

Ludwigia glandulosa 'Perennis' is a North American stem plant of the family Onagraceae, grown in aquaria for its red to violet foliage under strong light.

Overview

Ludwigia glandulosa 'Perennis' is a cultivated stem plant from the genus Ludwigia, a group of about 82 mostly tropical aquatic species named by Carl Linnaeus. It originates from North America and is kept in planted aquaria for its reddish to violet leaves, which deepen in color when the plant receives sufficient light. The form was previously marketed under the name Ludwigia perennis.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Onagraceae
  • Genus: Ludwigia
  • Scientific name: Ludwigia glandulosa 'Perennis'

Habitat

The genus Ludwigia, also known as water-primrose or primrose-willow, has a cosmopolitan but mainly tropical distribution and grows in wetlands and shallow aquatic habitats. Ludwigia glandulosa is native to North America.

Tank requirements

  • Temperature: 22-28 °C (72-82 °F)
  • pH: 5.5-7.0
  • GH: 2-10 °dGH
  • Plant height: 15-30+ cm
  • Plant width: 5-12 cm
  • Lighting: medium to high
  • CO2: recommended (6-14 mg/L)
  • Placement: midground

Growth and care

Growth rate is medium and the plant is regarded as demanding. Adequate light intensity and added CO2 promote dense growth and intensify leaf color; under insufficient illumination the lower leaves may drop and coloration stays greener. Regular dosing of trace elements supports healthy foliage.

Propagation

Propagation is by cuttings: a side shoot is cut and replanted, where it develops its own roots. Trimming the tops also encourages bushier lateral growth.
