Limnophila polysperma 'Red' Care Guide
Limnophila polysperma 'Red' is a red-toned Asian stem plant (Plantaginaceae), an easy, fast-growing selection often confused with Hygrophila polysperma.
Overview
Limnophila polysperma 'Red' is a red-leaved selection within the genus Limnophila, a group of Asian aquatic plants in the family Plantaginaceae. In the hobby this name is frequently confused with Hygrophila polysperma, an unrelated Acanthaceae species. The selection is grown as a fast, undemanding stem plant that develops a red flush under good lighting.
Taxonomy
- Family: Plantaginaceae
- Genus: Limnophila
- Scientific name: Limnophila polysperma 'Red'
- Note: often confused with Hygrophila polysperma (Acanthaceae)
Habitat
The genus Limnophila is native to subtropical and tropical Asia, where its species grow in freshwater wetlands such as ponds, ditches and rice fields, and can develop both submerged and emergent forms.
Aquarium requirements
- Temperature: 22-28 °C (72-82 °F)
- pH: 6.0-7.8
- GH: 3-14 °dGH
- Lighting: medium (stronger light promotes red tones)
- CO2: not required
- Maximum height: up to about 35 cm
- Placement: background
Growth and care
This is a fast-growing, easy stem plant that tolerates a broad range of conditions. Stronger lighting and a good nutrient supply bring out the reddish colour, while in low light the foliage stays predominantly green. Regular trimming keeps growth dense and prevents it crowding neighbours.
Propagation
Propagation is by cuttings: shoot tips or side shoots are cut and replanted into the substrate, where they root and continue to grow.
