Limnophila heterophylla Care Guide
Limnophila heterophylla is an Asian stem plant (Plantaginaceae) with finely divided whorled leaves that forms lush green feathery groups in moderate light.
Overview
Limnophila heterophylla is an aquatic stem plant of the family Plantaginaceae. Its submerged form bears whorls of finely divided, feathery leaves and develops lush green groups under moderate lighting. The species name heterophylla reflects the difference between its emersed and submerged leaf forms.
Taxonomy
- Family: Plantaginaceae
- Genus: Limnophila
- Scientific name: Limnophila heterophylla
Habitat
The species is widespread across subtropical and tropical Asia, ranging from Pakistan eastward to China and Borneo. It occurs in freshwater wetland habitats and, like other Limnophila, can grow both submerged and emergent.
Aquarium requirements
- Temperature: 22-28 °C (72-82 °F)
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- GH: 3-14 °dGH
- Lighting: medium to high
- CO2: not required (5-40 mg/l beneficial)
- Maximum height: up to about 40 cm
- Placement: background, midground
Growth and care
This is a fast-growing, easy stem plant that tolerates a broad range of water conditions, with hardness around 2-21 °dKH and pH 5-8 reported. It produces pinnate, feathery submerged leaves and forms dense feathery clusters; regular trimming keeps the group neat.
Propagation
Propagation is by cuttings: shoot tips or side shoots are cut and replanted into the substrate, where they root and continue to grow.
