Kribensis care guide
Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) — minimum tank 80 L, temperature 24-27 °C, pH 5.5-7.5.
Overview
The Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) is a small West African dwarf cichlid renowned for vivid pair colours and well-developed brood care. Males are larger with extended fin filaments while females develop a bright cherry-red belly when ready to spawn.
Taxonomy
- Family: Cichlidae
- Genus: Pelvicachromis
- Scientific name: Pelvicachromis pulcher
- Common synonyms: Purple Cichlid
Habitat
Native to coastal lowland rivers and streams of southern Nigeria and western Cameroon, including the Niger Delta and Cross River basins. The species inhabits soft, slightly acidic, slow-moving water with leaf litter and dense root cover.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 80 L (21.1 US gal)
- Adult size: 8-10 cm
- Temperature: 24-27 °C (75-81 °F)
- pH: 5.5-7.5
- GH: 3-12 °dGH
- Water flow: moderate
- Lifespan: 4-6 years
Diet
An omnivore feeding on invertebrates, plant matter and biofilm in the wild. In aquaria it accepts small sinking cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp; occasional vegetable matter supports digestion and colour.
Compatibility
A peaceful dwarf cichlid outside spawning, but pairs aggressively defend territory when breeding. Suitable in a planted community tank with mid-water dither fish such as Congo Tetra, Lemon Tetra or Rainbowfish. Provide caves, driftwood and dense planting to allow other bottom dwellers to avoid the breeding territory.
Breeding
A cave spawner. A bonded pair selects a small cave or inverted flowerpot, the female lays the eggs on the cave ceiling and both parents guard the wrigglers and fry; broods of 50-100 fry are common.
Conservation status
IUCN Red List: Least Concern. The species has a wide West African range and aquarium stocks are routinely captive-bred.
