Java Moss 'Mini' Care Guide

Java Moss 'Mini' is a compact selection of Taxiphyllum barbieri with finer, denser fronds, ideal for small mossy hardscape detail.

Overview

Java moss, Taxiphyllum barbieri, is one of the most common mosses in the aquarium trade and belongs to the family Hypnaceae. The 'Mini' selection is a compact, tissue-cultured form with finer, denser fronds, useful for small mossy hardscape detail. The species is dioecious and perennial.

Taxonomy

  • Family: Hypnaceae
  • Genus: Taxiphyllum
  • Scientific name: Taxiphyllum barbieri 'Mini'
  • Common name: Java moss
  • Often confused with: Vesicularia dubyana

Habitat

Taxiphyllum barbieri is native to Southeast Asia and was originally described from Vinh, Vietnam, where it is the only confirmed wild record. It grows in humid riparian areas, attaching to rocks, roots and driftwood. It was first introduced to European aquarists in 1968.

Aquarium requirements

  • Temperature: 18-28 °C (64-82 °F), tolerates 20-30 °C
  • pH: 5.5-7.5
  • GH: 2-14 °dGH
  • Lighting: low
  • CO2: not required
  • Placement: epiphyte (on hardscape)
  • Maximum height: about 6 cm

Java moss thrives between about 20 and 30 °C and accepts various water types, including weakly brackish water. It clings to surfaces and can be cultivated into moss carpets. It is widely used to shelter fry and tadpoles, and shrimp feed on the microorganisms and detritus that collect on it, making it shrimp-safe.

Care and growth

Growth rate is slow for the 'Mini' form. It is undemanding and grows under low light without CO2. Periodic trimming keeps it compact and prevents lower layers from being shaded out.

Propagation

Java moss propagates by division. A portion is separated and tied or glued to hardscape, where its clinging fronds attach and spread over time.
