Hypancistrus L411 (Hypancistrus sp. L411) Care Guide
Hypancistrus sp. L411 is a small Brazilian loricariid catfish with fine worm-line markings that requires a protein-rich, carnivorous diet.
Overview
Hypancistrus sp. L411 is an L-numbered loricariid catfish from the genus Hypancistrus. It is a less common species in the hobby, recognised by delicate worm-line markings on a dark body. Like its relatives it is a carnivore that needs a protein-based diet and clean, well-oxygenated water.
Taxonomy
- Family: Loricariidae
- Genus: Hypancistrus
- Scientific name: Hypancistrus sp. L411
- Trade designation: L411
Habitat
The species is recorded from river systems in Pará state, Brazil. The genus Hypancistrus occurs in clearwater and blackwater tributaries of the Amazon and Orinoco, typically over rocky substrate in flowing water.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 120 L
- Temperature: 25-29 degrees Celsius (77-84 degrees Fahrenheit)
- pH: 6.0-7.0
- GH: 1-10 dGH
- Water flow: moderate, well oxygenated
- Lifespan: 8-12 years
Provide caves and driftwood for shelter. The species is nocturnal and shy.
Diet
L411 prefers a meaty diet. Suitable foods include frozen bloodworm and live foods such as brine shrimp and white or grindal worms, alongside sinking prepared foods. Juveniles may take some vegetable matter, but the adult diet is protein-led.
Compatibility
The species is peaceful and stays near the bottom. It suits calm tankmates such as tetras and Corydoras. Aggressive plecos should be avoided, and mixing several Hypancistrus species together is discouraged because of hybridisation risk.
Breeding
L411 is a cave-spawning Hypancistrus and breeding is rated advanced. Males develop broader heads and longer odontodes than females.
