Exochochromis anagenys Breeding Guide

Breeding Exochochromis anagenys, an open-water Malawi piscivore: sexing, harem setup, maternal mouthbrooding and three-week fasting brood care in a large tank.

Overview

Exochochromis anagenys is a streamlined haplochromine endemic to Lake Malawi, found around Thumbi West Island and in the southeastern part of the lake. It is a strict piscivore whose diet consists mainly of small mbuna cichlids, and AquaInfo notes that tank mates smaller than about 10-12 cm may be treated as food. It is a maternal mouthbrooder.

Sexing

Sexual dimorphism is minimal: AquaInfo states females are very similar in colour to males, which is unusual for a Lake Malawi cichlid. The most consistent difference is size, with males reaching about 30 cm and females about 25 cm in the aquarium; dominant males also develop the deep blue body and red anal fin noted in the record.

Conditioning

Condition breeders on meaty foods such as small fish, smelt, sprat, pollock fillet, shrimp and mussel, supplemented with dry granules. AquaInfo lists 22-26 C (22-27 C for breeding), pH 7.5-8.5 and GH 10-20 dGH (12-16 dGH for breeding), close to the record's 24-27 C and pH 7.8-8.6.

Breeding Setup

AquaInfo recommends a minimum of about 800 L and 220 cm length, with rocky structure and open swimming space. A single male with several females suits this active open-water hunter and spreads spawning attention across the group.

Spawning Behavior & Trigger

As a maternal mouthbrooder the female collects the eggs and they are fertilised in the typical haplochromine sequence. A quiet, stable environment is important during breeding because stress can reduce brood success.

Egg & Fry Care

The female keeps the eggs, larvae and young safe in her mouth for about three weeks and does not eat during this period. After release the young remain under maternal protection for a few days before becoming independent, and first foods include Artemia, water fleas and fine dust food.

Common Challenges

The strict piscivorous diet rules out small tank mates, and the female's complete fast while holding means she must be well-conditioned before spawning and given a calm tank to carry the full term without prematurely spitting the brood.
