Propagating Eriocaulon sp. 'Amazon'

How to propagate the rosette-forming Eriocaulon sp. 'Amazon' by dividing its clump and separating lateral plantlets in soft, acidic, CO2-injected aquariums.

Overview

Eriocaulon belongs to the family Eriocaulaceae, a genus of nearly 500 monocotyledonous flowering plants commonly called pipeworts. They are mostly herbaceous perennials that grow as rosettes rather than as stem plants, so this species is not propagated by topping cuttings. Eriocaulon sp. 'Amazon' is a South American form that forms a tight grass-like rosette and is a weak competitor that prefers undisturbed, soft acidic conditions.

Because it is a rosette plant, propagation relies on the natural production of new crowns and lateral plantlets around the mother rosette, followed by careful division. With strong light and CO2 the central rosette thickens and pushes out offsets that can be detached and replanted.

Propagation Method

There are two practical routes: vegetative division of the clump and, more rarely, growing from seed. For aquarium keepers, division is the reliable method. The main rosette often produces a shower of baby plants attached to it, which contribute to the overall thickness of the bush; these baby plants can be cut away and replanted elsewhere.

  • Clump division: separate each distinct crown once it is clearly defined from the main cluster.
  • Lateral plantlets: detach the small baby rosettes that form around the mother plant.
  • Seeds: possible but slow and uncommon in aquarium culture.

Step-by-Step

  1. Wait until the mother rosette has several distinct crowns and visible baby plants attached around it.
  2. Gently lift the whole clump from the substrate, keeping the fibrous roots intact.
  3. Identify each distinct crown and the attached lateral plantlets.
  4. Using clean, sharp scissors, separate each crown or plantlet so every division keeps its own roots.
  5. Replant each division into nutrient-rich substrate, burying only the roots and leaving the crown above the soil.
  6. Space divisions a few centimetres apart so light reaches each rosette.

Conditions for Healthy Growth

Eriocaulon naturally grows in wet soils and shallow water, and the aquarium forms do best in soft water below about 2 dKH with rich aquasoil and sufficient CO2 at substrate level. At least moderate lighting (around 60+ umol of PAR) is needed; higher intensity promotes compact growth. Keep the water soft and acidic, in line with this form's blackwater origin.

  • Lighting: medium to high; higher light keeps the rosette compact.
  • CO2: required, with strong delivery to the substrate level.
  • Water: soft (low dKH) and acidic, rich aquasoil substrate.

Maintenance

Healthy roots should be bright white and firm. After dividing, keep CO2 and light stable and avoid uprooting the new divisions until they have anchored. Because it is a weak competitor, keep faster plants and algae away from the rosettes so they are not shaded or overgrown.

Common Challenges

Two clear signs of trouble are older leaves melting faster than new ones grow, and poor root formation where roots are grey and soft instead of bright white and firm. Both usually point to water that is too hard, insufficient CO2, or too little light. Dividing a weak, unestablished plant can also stall growth, so wait for clear, well-rooted crowns before separating.
