Propagating Eichhornia diversifolia: Cuttings of a Fast Submerged Stem

How to propagate Eichhornia diversifolia from stem cuttings while keeping it in its fine submerged form, with the light and CO2 it needs to grow fast.

Overview

Eichhornia diversifolia is a smaller Eichhornia usually grown submersed as a fine, fast-growing background stem with whorled fan-shaped leaves. It grows quickly: stems planted at 8-15 cm can reach the waterline in about two weeks.

Propagation Method (Cuttings)

Propagation is by topping: cut the top few inches of a stem and replant that top in the substrate. The remaining bottom usually stalls at first, but if enough stem is left it will eventually choose one or more growth points and regrow a new top.

Step-by-Step

  1. Select a vigorous stem before it reaches the surface.
  2. Cut off the top few inches (roughly 8-12 cm) with clean scissors.
  3. Remove leaves from the lowest 5-7 cm of the cutting.
  4. Plant each cutting 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) deep, separately with space between stems rather than in one bunch.
  5. Leave the rooted bottom in place so it can re-shoot a new top.

Conditions for Healthy Growth

Eichhornia diversifolia is a high-light, CO2-loving stem plant. Strong light and injected CO2 keep the delicate whorled leaves compact and drive the fast vertical growth that makes it a good background plant in soft water.

Trimming & Maintenance

Because growth is fast, trim regularly — roughly every two weeks — and top stems before they hit the surface to keep them in the desirable submerged form and to harvest cuttings for replanting.

Common Challenges

The plant is somewhat harder to find than common stems, and the main pitfall is letting it reach the surface: the irreversible floating form ends the fine submerged look. Keep light and CO2 high and trim before the waterline to avoid losing the stem habit.
