Divandu albimarginatus Care Guide
Divandu albimarginatus is a West African stream cichlid from Gabon and the Congo Republic with white-edged fins, kept in soft, clear water.
Overview
Divandu albimarginatus is a West African stream cichlid and the only species in its genus. The specific name refers to the white margins on its finnage; the body is olive-toned and males can show a red flush. It is a peaceful fish for soft, clear water tanks.
Taxonomy
- Family: Cichlidae
- Genus: Divandu
- Scientific name: Divandu albimarginatus
- Described: Lamboj & Snoeks, 2000
Habitat
The species is found in the Kouilou-Niari and Loeme-Loukene basins of the Republic of the Congo and in the Nyanga, upper Ngounie and Ogowe basins of Gabon. FishBase records clear water with transparency over 100 cm, low conductivity around 50 µS, a pH near 7 to 7.5 and temperatures of 21 to 22 °C.
Tank requirements
- Minimum tank volume: 150 L
- Temperature: 24-28 °C (75-82 °F)
- pH: 6.0-7.0
- GH: 2-12 °dGH
- Adult size: up to about 11 cm
- Lifespan: 5-8 years
Diet
The species feeds on small particles of both animal and plant origin, detritus and aufwuchs, with an omnivorous trophic level. In the aquarium a varied diet of prepared foods, frozen invertebrates and some vegetable matter suits it. Feeding twice daily is appropriate.
Compatibility
The species is peaceful and suits soft-water community tanks. Suitable companions include West African tetras, Congo tetras, Synodontis nigriventris and other peaceful West African cichlids. Hard-water Rift-lake cichlids should be avoided.
Breeding
FishBase records the species as a female mouthbrooder with a polygamous reproductive style, in which the female incubates the eggs and young in the mouth. Soft, clear water and shelter support breeding behaviour.
Conservation status
FishBase lists Divandu albimarginatus as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
