Habitat
Endemic to Lake Malawi, where it ambushes prey among Vallisneria weed beds and reed margins. The strongly laterally compressed body provides camouflage among vertical stems. A piscivorous hap and maternal mouthbrooder; sometimes reported to eat the eyes of prey fish.
