Cryptocoryne zonata Care Guide
Cryptocoryne zonata is a Bornean crypt of the C. cordata complex from Sarawak swamps and blackwater, thriving in shaded, soft, acidic conditions.
Overview
Cryptocoryne zonata is a crypt from Borneo associated with the Cryptocoryne cordata complex; it has been treated as Cryptocoryne cordata var. zonata. It grows in shaded swamps and blackwater of Sarawak and is used as a midground plant in soft-water aquariums.
Taxonomy
- Family: Araceae
- Order: Alismatales
- Genus: Cryptocoryne
- Scientific name: Cryptocoryne zonata
- Group: Cryptocoryne cordata complex
Habitat
The plant is found in freshwater swamps and blackwater streams or rivers near the coastal area of Sarawak, with a wide distribution in the southwestern part of the state. Most plants grow submersed under forest shade, though some occur in direct sunlight; the water is typically very soft. The spathe is bright yellowish in colour.
Tank requirements
- Temperature: 22-27 °C (72-81 °F)
- pH: 5.0-6.8
- GH: 1-6 °dGH
- Lighting: low
- CO2: not required
- Growth rate: slow
- Maximum height: about 25 cm
- Placement: midground
Planting and care
Cryptocoryne zonata reflects its blackwater origin and is best kept in very soft, acidic water with a nutrient-rich substrate, shade to low light, and stable parameters. Crypts of the cordata complex are sensitive to abrupt change, so leaf melt is likely after planting or relocation, especially into fresh substrate; the plant recovers from the rhizome once established. It is generally treated as a plant for experienced keepers.
Propagation
Propagation is by runners. Daughter plants form on underground runners around the parent; under stable soft-water conditions they can be separated and replanted once large enough to establish independently.
