Propagating Cryptocoryne zaidiana

How to propagate Cryptocoryne zaidiana, a slow Borneo rosette crypt, through stolon runners and rhizome division while managing the dreaded crypt melt.

Overview

Cryptocoryne zaidiana is a rosette-forming crypt from Borneo, growing from a creeping rhizome rather than from a stem you can top. Like the rest of the genus, it naturally inhabits streams, rivers and seasonally inundated forest pools in lowland tropical forest. It is a slow grower, so propagation is a patient process rather than a quick multiplication.

Propagation Method (Runners / Division)

Submerged crypts reproduce vegetatively. The main route is the stolon: a horizontal runner that creeps through the substrate and pushes up daughter rosettes a short distance from the mother plant. Once a daughter has its own leaves and roots, it can be separated. The second route is rhizome division, splitting an established clump so each section keeps roots and at least one growing point.

Step-by-Step

  1. Let the mother plant settle and grow undisturbed until it sends out runners with daughter rosettes.
  2. Gently lift the plant or work in the substrate to expose the stolon connecting mother and daughter.
  3. Wait until each daughter has several leaves and its own root bundle before separating.
  4. Cut or pinch the stolon, keeping roots intact on both pieces.
  5. For division, split the rhizome so each piece has roots and a visible growing crown.
  6. Replant each section into nutrient-rich substrate at the same depth and leave it alone to recover.

Conditions for Healthy Growth

Provide low light, soft slightly acidic water, warm tropical temperatures and a nutrient-rich substrate. As a root feeder, this crypt draws most of its nutrition through the rhizome and roots, so a rich bottom and root tabs matter more than heavy water-column dosing. CO2 is not required.

Maintenance

Keep parameters stable, top up substrate nutrients periodically and remove any fully decayed leaves. Because it is slow and creeps via stolons, give it space and avoid frequent uprooting, which only resets growth.

Common Challenges

Do not throw out a melted plant. Hold conditions steady and the rhizome will push new leaves. Beyond melt, the main challenges are its slow pace and sensitivity to sudden parameter swings.
