Cryptocoryne zaidiana Care Guide
Cryptocoryne zaidiana is an amphibious crypt from Sarawak on Borneo, described in 2005 and sought after by collectors; it suits soft, low-light tanks.
Overview
Cryptocoryne zaidiana is a species of the genus Cryptocoryne from Borneo, described from the Miri Division of Sarawak in 2005. It is an amphibious plant named in honour of Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce. Relatively recent in cultivation, it is sought after by crypt collectors and is grown as a midground plant.
Taxonomy
- Family: Araceae
- Order: Alismatales
- Genus: Cryptocoryne
- Scientific name: Cryptocoryne zaidiana
Habitat
The species grows in the intertidal freshwater zone of the Sungai Mering in the Miri Division of Sarawak, occurring in small patches on muddy ground of sandy clay soil with a litter of leaves and twigs. Its spathe has an ovate, strongly recurved limb whose upper surface bears distinct dark purple protuberances on a whitish base, with a creamy collar.
Tank requirements
- Temperature: 22-27 °C (72-81 °F)
- pH: 5.5-7.0
- GH: 2-8 °dGH
- Lighting: low
- CO2: not required
- Growth rate: slow
- Maximum height: about 25 cm
- Placement: midground
Planting and care
As a crypt from soft-water Bornean habitats, Cryptocoryne zaidiana is best kept in soft water with a nutrient-rich substrate and low light, with stable parameters. It is rooted in substrate and reacts to abrupt changes like other crypts, so leaf melt may follow planting or relocation; established plants regrow from the rhizome. It is generally treated as a plant for experienced keepers.
Propagation
Propagation is by runners. As an amphibious species it can be grown emersed, where it tends to form lateral shoots and runners more readily; daughter plants can be separated and replanted once large enough.
